Students explored the photographic paintings of contemporary American artist Chuck Close. Despite suffering a spinal artery collapse that left him paralyzed in 1988, Close perseveres and continues to paint and produce portraits of incredible realism. He also suffers from a neurological disorder that prevents him from recognizing faces. Chuck Close is an inspiration to us all.
Students voted to paint a portrait of Taylor Swift and Shaquille O'Neal in the style of Close, who created grids over photographs of people in order to create a larger version. He paints each portrait cell by cell. We created a grid over these photographs, and each student received a cell or pixel of the image to paint. Pictured here is the portrait of Taylor Swift in progress!
