On October 6th twenty students from B.A.S.E went to the Apple Store in the South Shore Plaza. They worked in groups to create their very own storyboards. Using Photo Booth and iMovie, they were able to turn their stories into short films. Students learned how to edit clips, add background sound, and create special effects. At the end of the trip each student took home their own dvd. We are excited to go again next month with twenty different students!
This week the kids worked as a team to define what community met to them. Ms. Mia & Mr. Kevin provided excellent activities focused on defining a community. The kids were able to share what their community looks like by writing on a large paper to display everyone vision of our community which we live in. Ms. Mia & Mr. Kevin provided the kids with the opportunity to create a community web to represent their own personal community. They represented this by cutting spiral lines out of constuction paper. The kids really enjoyed this activity and worked together to display very unique community webs.
Each week students at Hollis B.A.S.E are introduced to new and exciting themes. Mr. Kevin and Ms. Mia announced that students would be studying the continent of Africa for the next few weeks. Students started by charting out a brainstorm that addressed what students have learned in the past about Africa and what questions they would like to explore through research on Africa. The Hollis B.A.S.E students were very thoughtful and inquisitive about the current state of Africa. Some questions that were posed were: How are schools ran in Africa? What does the political structure look like in Africa? What is the connection between African dance, music and religion?Does clothing define your culture/status in Africa? What are the modes of transportation used in Africa? Does Africa have one flag that represents the whole continent? The list continued to grow as students started to think critically about the similarities and differences in American lifestyles and traditions vs. African lifestyles and traditions.
