On Friday April 15 Students spent the afternoon cleaning up outside of Hollis Elementary School. The basketball court, fields, and gravel area are used by both the students are Hollis School and B.A.S.E as well as visitors that come for softball, baseball and football. The Older Kids at B.A.S.E. were fed up of finding empty bottles, plastic bags, and other trash items outside so they took matters into their own hands.
Students worked diligently on the sections of these portraits, and when the final complete portrait came together (it was like putting a puzzle together!) we were all so excited!
Here is country star Taylor Swift and Boston Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon! Students explored the photographic paintings of contemporary American artist Chuck Close. Despite suffering a spinal artery collapse that left him paralyzed in 1988, Close perseveres and continues to paint and produce portraits of incredible realism. He also suffers from a neurological disorder that prevents him from recognizing faces. Chuck Close is an inspiration to us all. Students voted to paint a portrait of Taylor Swift and Shaquille O'Neal in the style of Close, who created grids over photographs of people in order to create a larger version. He paints each portrait cell by cell. We created a grid over these photographs, and each student received a cell or pixel of the image to paint. Pictured here is the portrait of Taylor Swift in progress!
